Product Information
Peptone is a bacterial growth medium that contains a mixture of peptones and other salts. It is used in microbiology to grow bacteria or as a nutrient for probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus. In order to optimize the growth of bacteria, the concentration of peptone must be adjusted. The optimum concentration can be determined by adding an antimicrobial agent to the solution and determining the concentration at which no change in bacterial growth occurs. The optimal pH for peptone is between 6 and 8. A common antimicrobial agent used in this process is benzalkonium chloride, which has shown to inhibit the growth of wild-type strains but not probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus.
