Description:

1-Phenylguanidine is a drug that binds to the hydroxyl group of human serum albumin. It is used in vitro as an antifungal agent and also has activity against certain serine proteases. 1-Phenylguanidine has been shown to form stable complexes with sodium carbonate in vitro, which may be due to the formation of diphenolase activity. This reaction also requires nitrogen atoms from the amino acid lysine. The uptake of 1-phenylguanidine by cells may be facilitated by a hydrogen bond between the reactive guanidine moiety and the carboxylate anion of bicarbonate ion.
