2-Propenylphenol is a glycol ether that can react with the hydroxyl group of an alcohol to form an ester. It has been shown to have genotoxic effects in a structural analysis of calf thymus DNA. 2-Propenylphenol exists as two stereoisomers, cis and trans, which differ in the orientation of the double bond between the two carbon atoms. The trans isomer is more stable than the cis, but both are soluble in organic solvents. This compound has been used as a solid catalyst for polymerization reactions and has been shown to be effective for cationic polymerization. 2-Propenylphenol also reacts with fatty acids to form esters and it may be used as a proton donor in transfer reactions or analytical methods.
