Trans-3-Pentenenitrile is an unsaturated alkyl that belongs to the class of aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is a recycled product and can be used as a substitute for other petroleum products, such as polystyrene, which are usually derived from petroleum. Trans-3-Pentenenitrile has been shown to have liver toxicity in Sprague Dawley rats when administered by oral gavage at doses greater than 2g/kg body weight. The major metabolites of trans-3-pentenenitrile in rats are glycidyl ethers, which are formed by the reaction of 3-pentenenitrile with the enzyme glycidyl transferase.
