PEG methacrylate is a water soluble polymer with an average molecular weight of 1000. It can be synthesized by reacting PEG with methacrylic anhydride in the presence of a base. This process yields a polymer that has been shown to be immobilized on metal surfaces through electrostatic interactions and then used as a coating for cardiac catheters. The coating prevents blood from sticking to the surface and reduces the risk of infection. PEG methacrylate has also been used to encapsulate cells for microscopy techniques and architectures, as well as physicochemical studies.
