The kinetic resolution of this compound is due to the formation of an enamine, which undergoes a 1,4-addition reaction with an aldoxime or piperidone. (R)-2-Phenylpiperidine can be synthesized from commercially available starting materials by reacting an amino acid with a carbonyl group, such as formaldehyde. This reaction requires a catalyst, such as sodium cyanoborohydride.
