2,3,4,7,8-Pentachlorodibenzofuran is a polychlorinated dibenzofuran which is primarily used as an oxidation catalyst. It has been shown to induce lymphocyte transformation in rats and to affect locomotor activity in mice. 2,3,4,7,8-Pentachlorodibenzofuran undergoes metabolism by the liver microsomes of rats and humans to form different metabolites with varying degrees of toxicity. The most important metabolite is 2,3,4’-, 7- and 8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,4’-, 7- and 8-PCDD), which is toxic to humans.
