Pentaethylene glycol monohexyl ether is a non-ionic surfactant that is used as an emulsifier in the manufacture of soaps and detergents. It has been shown to synergistically inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as "Pseudomonas aeruginosa" and "Staphylococcus aureus", in vitro. Pentaethylene glycol monohexyl ether has also been shown to be toxic to animals, particularly at high concentrations. The substance can be used for viscosity control in industrial processes such as oil drilling. Pentaethylene glycol monohexyl ether also has potential applications in biotechnology, including structural studies of fatty acids and protein synthesis inhibitors.
