Paraoxon is an organophosphate pesticide that inhibits cholinesterase and interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses. Paraoxon is used as a specific antidote for organophosphate poisoning, but can be toxic to humans at high doses. This chemical has been shown to produce a matrix effect in cells, which alters the permeability of membranes. Paraoxon interferes with the normal function of cells by inhibiting protein synthesis through phosphorylation of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP). It also inhibits myocardial infarct and primary cells by binding to cytochrome P450 enzymes in mitochondria. The reaction mechanism for paraoxon is unclear, but it may involve formation of free radicals or hydrogen peroxide.
