Phenyl chlorothionoformate is a white crystalline solid that reacts with sodium carbonate to produce diphenyl sulfoxide. It has been used in the synthesis of a number of organic compounds, including amines and anhydrous sodium carbonate. Phenyl chlorothionoformate can also be used as a chemical intermediate in the production of dibutyltin oxide, which is used as a corrosion inhibitor. The reagent also inhibits microbial growth by reacting with the hydroxyl group on their cell wall and disrupting their membrane function.
