1-Phenyl-1-(2-pyridyl)ethanol is a synthetic industrial chemical that is used in the production of acetylpyridine. It is prepared through a reaction between chloroformate and peroxide, which is catalyzed by hydrogen peroxide. The yield of this reaction can be improved by using layered solvents such as chloroform or dichloromethane. This chemical has been found to hydrolyze in acidic or alkaline solution, and can be prepared from the reduction of pyridine with sodium borohydride in a solvent such as ethanol or tetrahydrofuran.
