Phenylpropylmethylamine hydrochloride is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CHClN. It is soluble in water and organic solvents. Phenylpropylmethylamine hydrochloride can be prepared by reacting chloropropane with hydrogen chloride, or by reacting phenylpropanolamine with hydrochloric acid in the presence of dodecyl mercaptan and sodium hydroxide solution. The impurities present in this product include chloropropane, chloride gas, and hydroxide ions. The reactions involved are exothermic reactions that require cooling to prevent overheating. Impurities may also form if this product is not reacted under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen gas.
