L-Primapterin is an atypical, regiospecific, hyperphenylalaninemia. It is also known as L-monapterin and has a pentose ring. The probe for this compound is the D-isomer. L-Primapterin can be synthesized from a precursor molecule called neopterin through two steps, namely cleavage of the side chain and addition of the amino acid valine. This compound is found in humans and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. The optical isomers are used in chemical probes to identify the regiospecificity of L-primapterin.
