Description

Prothionamide sulfoxide is a prodrug that is converted to prothionamide in vivo. It has been used for the treatment of tuberculosis. The bioequivalence of prothionamide sulfoxide with prothionamide has been demonstrated by its conversion to prothionamide in plasma and urine, as well as by the pharmacokinetic profile in healthy volunteers. This conversion to prothionamide can be achieved using a variety of different techniques, including sample preparation with acetonitrile or ethyl acetate. Prothionamide sulfoxide is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
