4-Pyrazolecarboxylic acid methyl ester is an acetal compound that is synthesized by the reaction of orthoformate, dimethylformamide, and triethyl orthoformate. The desired product is obtained through the alkylation of a pyrazole ring with triethyl orthoformate or diethyl pyrazole. 4-Pyrazolecarboxylic acid methyl ester is an alkylating agent that reacts with DNA to form adducts. This acetal compound also reacts with proteins in a similar manner. The triethyl formate moiety can be removed from the molecule by treatment with an alkali metal hydroxide such as potassium hydroxide to produce a carboxylic acid, which can be used for other purposes.
