Description:

(R)-2-Pyrrolidinone-5-carboxylic acid is an endogenous metabolite of glutamate. It has been shown to be present in mammalian tissues and urine samples. The uptake of (R)-2-pyrrolidinone-5-carboxylic acid into rat kidney cells and its conversion to glutamine was observed following treatment with gamma aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter that regulates the activity of the kidney tubule cells. The presence of this metabolite may provide evidence for a potential role in the progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This compound may also play a role in regulating cation channel activity, which could be useful for developing new drugs for treating epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
