Alpha-pinene oxide is a reactive monoterpene hydrocarbon that is produced from alpha-pinene by the action of an acid catalyst. Alpha-pinene oxide reacts with the epoxide group to form a new ring structure, which is called an epoxide. This reaction product can be used as a precursor for the production of other chemicals such as anti-inflammatory drugs, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. The rate of this reaction increases with increasing concentration of carbon source. Alpha-pinene oxide has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against bacteria such as covid-19 pandemic and can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections. FTIR spectroscopy is a technique that can be used to identify alpha-pinene oxide in samples.
