1-Phenyl-1,2-propanedione is a chemical compound that is used in the manufacture of some drugs. It has been shown to be a substrate for the enzyme hydroxylase, which converts it to p-hydroxybenzoic acid. 1-Phenyl-1,2-propanedione can also be converted into cinchonidine by methylation and hydroxylation reactions. 1-Phenyl-1,2-propanedione has two reactive hydroxyl groups that allow it to form hydrogen bonds with other "polar" molecules such as hydrochloric acid and hydrogen gas. 1-Phenyl-1,2-propanedione is used in the synthesis of drugs that are used for treating infectious diseases and congestive heart conditions.
