Description:

2-(Phenoxymethyl)oxirane is a phenyl ether that has been used as an analytical reagent. It can react with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to produce picolinic acid. This reaction is catalyzed by glycidyl, which has been shown to be reactive in the presence of human serum. 2-(Phenoxymethyl)oxirane also has conformational properties, and its reactions are determined by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the phenoxy group and the ether oxygen atoms. The stability of this compound increases in acidic conditions due to resonance stabilization of the phenoxide anion intermediate that is formed during its decomposition.
