Phenoxathiin is a synthetic compound that belongs to the group of phenoxazinoids. It is used as an enzyme inhibitor for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Phenoxathiin can be synthesized by reacting malonic acid with trifluoroacetic acid. The conformational properties of phenoxathin are similar to those found in natural products like thianthrene and suzuki coupling reaction, which leads to its inhibition of the polymerase activity. Phenoxathin also has cationic polymerization properties, which allow it to be used in hydroxyl-group containing polymers.
The hydroxyl group on phenoxathin can undergo nucleophilic attack by a water molecule, resulting in formation of a tetrahedral intermediate. This process is reversible and can lead to the release of water molecule or formation of a new covalent bond.
