It is soluble in acetone, ethanol, and benzene. 1,3-Phenylenediacetonitrile is used as an intermediate in the preparation of 2-alkenylcyclohexanones and other compounds. It can be prepared by the oxidation of 1,2-phenylenediacetonitrile or by the reaction of benzaldehyde with nitroethane. The functional groups are phenyl and nitro groups.
