Prolintane is a pharmacological agent that is used for the treatment of bowel disease. It is a strong inhibitor of the enzyme histamine N-methyltransferase and has been shown to be effective in treating ulcerative colitis. Prolintane also inhibits the uptake of dopamine, which may be responsible for its depressant effect. This drug is used as an analytical reference standard to measure the activity of enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, which break down neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and butyrylcholine respectively. Prolintane can be used in clinical trials to measure the effectiveness of drugs against symptoms associated with inflammatory bowel disease or diabetic neuropathy. The drug should be diluted with sodium citrate before use to avoid precipitation.
