Diphenylsilane is a colorless, oily liquid with a boiling point of -8.4°C. It is soluble in benzene and ether, and can be used as a solvent for other substances. Diphenylsilane has been shown to have the ability to form trimers through reaction with ethyl decanoate or amines. This chemical undergoes dehydrogenative reactions with methyl ketones, giving rise to the formation of an amine-hydroperoxide intermediate that reacts with hydrogen to form an amine and a hydroperoxide. The amino group on this intermediate then undergoes nucleophilic attack by the carbonyl carbon atom in the methyl ketone, forming an amide bond between the two molecules. This process is reversible, but more likely to occur when there are high concentrations of amines present in the system.
