3-(3-Pyridyl)-L-alanine is a cytotoxic compound that inhibits the biosynthesis of peptide hormones and has been shown to be effective against prostate cancer cells. It acts by inhibiting the functioned of the synthase gene, which encodes for a synthetase enzyme necessary for peptidyl chain formation. 3-(3-Pyridyl)-L-alanine also binds to receptors on cells such as cyclodepsipeptide analogs and antibiotics. This drug has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vivo through its ability to bind to ribosomal enzymes.
