trans-3-(4-Pyridyl)acrylic acid is an organometallic compound that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It was first synthesized in 1887 and has potent antibacterial activity. This molecule has a molecular weight of 214.2, a density of 1.077 g/mL, and a melting point of 179°C. The reaction solution is colorless when it is dissolved in water and the hydrogen bonds are not ionized. The malonic acid present in trans-3-(4-pyridyl)acrylic acid reacts with the aldehyde groups to form esters that are soluble in organic solvents. The fluorescence of trans-3-(4-pyridyl)acrylic acid can be detected with ultraviolet light at 365 nm and its emission wavelength is 378 nm.
