Pentafluorobenzonitrile is a colourless, volatile liquid with a pungent odour. It is soluble in organic solvents and reacts with water to form hydrochloric acid and hydrogen fluoride. Pentafluorobenzonitrile is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of organic chemicals, such as diphenyl ethers, or it can be used to prepare some pharmaceuticals. It has been shown that pentafluorobenzonitrile can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections. The bactericidal activity of pentafluorobenzonitrile against bacteria was due to its ability to react with water to form hydrochloric acid and hydrogen fluoride. Pentafluorobenzonitrile also reacts with chlorine atoms to form chlorine gas, which damages cell walls and results in bacterial death.
