Prosultiamine is a disulfide-bonded lipoamide derivative that modulates mitochondrial function, which is involved in the generation of ATP and reactive oxygen species. It also has been shown to affect receptor cells by altering the mitochondrial membrane potential and regulating fatty acid metabolism. This drug has been shown to decrease enzyme activities such as succinate dehydrogenase, acyl-CoA synthase, and carnitine palmitoyltransferase. Prosultiamine has been shown to have beneficial effects on diabetic neuropathy, cardiac effects, and tissue culture. Its tissue culture effects may be due to its ability to increase mitochondrial functions. Prosultiamine's biological properties are still being studied.
