1-Phenyldodecane is a matrix effect chemical that is used as a fluorescence probe to measure enzyme activities. It has been shown to have optimum concentration values of 0.1 mM and 0.5 mM, with an extinction coefficient of 1.0×103 M-1 cm-1 at 295 nm. 1-Phenyldodecane reacts with sodium salts in human serum or wastewater treatment to produce alkanes and hydrogen fluoride gas, which can be detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The reaction mechanism is believed to involve the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxyl group on the carbonyl carbon atom in the presence of sodium ions. Thermodynamic data for this reaction are available and analytical methods have been developed for determining the concentrations of 1-phenyldodecane and other alkyl dioxanes in environmental samples.
