- 4-phenyl-1,3-thiazol-2(3H)-one
4-Phenyl-2(3H)-thiazolone is a fragmenting agent that can be used to characterize the cyclization, fragmentation, and ionization mechanisms of organic molecules. It has been shown to have an electron affinity of 3.6 eV and a molecular weight of 172.4 g/mol. 4-Phenyl-2(3H)-thiazolone can be synthesized from 2,5-dichloro-4-(phenylsulfanyl)thiophene by reacting with potassium tert-butoxide in a solution of ethanol and tetrahydrofuran at -78 °C in the presence of lithium chloride. Fragmentation reactions are observed in the gas phase, which may result from the formation of ionic species or dimers during their decomposition. The equilibrium constant (K eq ) is 2.02 x 10^(-3).
