It is an intramolecular hydrogen acceptor, which means it can bind to an electron pair on the other side of a double bond. This binding process is reversible, and L-pyroglutamamide may be converted back to its original form by hydrolysis. L-Pyroglutamamide also has the ability to inhibit certain enzyme pathways that are important for fatty acid synthesis. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of β-unsaturated ketones and consequently reduces the amount of energy metabolism in humans.
