Description

3-Phenylglutaric acid is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in organic solvents, including diethyl ether, acetone and chloroform. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of many drugs, such as amides and esters. 3-Phenylglutaric acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro. This compound also has pharmacological activities against high blood pressure and inflammation. The inhibition of butyric acid production by 3-phenylglutaric acid may be due to its ability to form a hydrogen bond with the carboxylate group of butyric acid.
