4-Pentylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid is a cyclic carboxylic acid that can be found in naphthenic oils and is used as a carbon source in biochemical research. It has two possible structures, cis- and trans-, which are present in equal amounts. The cis- form of 4-pentylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid binds to amines, while the trans- form binds to carboxylates. The binding constants of both forms are similar. At high concentrations, these compounds have hydrophobic effects on the surface of organic solids and liquids, which can be determined by FTIR spectroscopy.
