Phthaloyl dichloride is a conditioner agent that is used in the acylation reaction. It is a solid catalyst for the synthesis of esters from acyl halides in the presence of aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons and trifluoroacetic acid. The reaction mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack by an acyl chloride on the carbonyl carbon atom of an alcohol, forming a hemiacetal intermediate. This intermediate undergoes an elimination reaction with water to form the desired product and regenerate the active catalyst. Nitro compounds are often added as oxidizing agents to convert hydrochloric acid into hydrogen chloride, which helps remove traces of water from the reaction solution. Zirconium oxide can be used as a solid catalyst for this reaction, as it does not react with hydrogen chloride.
