N-(1,10-Phenanthrolin-5-yl)iodoacetamide (NPA) is a coordination complex that has been shown to bind to the minor groove of dna. This binding prevents the separation of the two strands of DNA and inhibits replication. NPA also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to dna replication proteins, such as the DNA polymerase and helicase. NPA may be useful in the treatment of bacterial infections that are resistant to other antibiotics due to its ability to inhibit bacterial dna synthesis.
