Procainamide is an anti-arrhythmic drug used to treat cardiac arrhythmias. It has been shown in a number of studies to be effective for the treatment of erythematosus, which is an inflammatory skin condition. Procainamide is believed to act by inhibiting the biosynthesis of arachidonic acid, which produces prostaglandins and leukotrienes that mediate inflammation. Procainamide binds covalently with hydroxylamine and forms a metabolite that inhibits blood platelet aggregation. This drug also inhibits metabolic pathways in human cells, including nucleophilic reactions involving hydralazine or other drugs such as 2-propanol.
