Z-L-phenylalanine amide is a synthetic peptide hormone that binds to and activates the opioid receptors. The endogenous peptide ligands for these receptors are endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins. Z-L-phenylalanine amide has been shown to stimulate leucinamide synthesis in cells and can be used as a precursor for biotechnology. It also has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the ribosomal protein L1. This may be due to its conformational similarity to the antibiotic erythromycin or because it metabolizes into hippuric acid, which inhibits the growth of bacteria through competitive inhibition of cell wall synthesis.
