Phe-Gly-OH is a cyclic peptide with a hydroxyl group on the phenyl ring. It has been used as a model system for studying the uptake of drugs by cells. Phe-Gly-OH is taken up by cells in the proximal tubules of the kidney, where it forms disulfide bonds with proteins and inhibits enzyme activities. In tissue culture, Phe-Gly-OH has shown cytotoxicity to cervical cancer cells. It also binds to thrombin receptors and prevents platelet aggregation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit adenine nucleotide synthesis.
