D- or DL-Proline is an aliphatic amino acid that is used in the synthesis of peptides and proteins. It is soluble in a number of solvents, such as water, alcohols, and ether. D- or DL-proline can be crystallized from these solvents. D- or DL-proline can also be obtained by hydrolyzing prolinamide with sodium hydroxide. D- or DL-proline can be obtained from natural sources such as the plant proline betaine and the microbial fermentation of sugar beet molasses. This amino acid has biological properties that include hormone production and protein synthesis.
