Aciclovir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the DNA polymerase of the herpes simplex virus. It is used for the prevention and treatment of infections caused by this virus, including cold sores and genital herpes. Aciclovir can be used in two ways: as a topical cream or lotion to prevent herpes outbreaks, or as an oral medication to treat existing outbreaks. Aciclovir has been shown to be effective against the most common strains of the herpes virus, including HSV-1 and HSV-2. This drug can also be used in immunocompromised patients (e.g., neonates) and for life-threatening episodes of herpes infection. Side effects include severe headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, confusion and hallucinations.
