PBD-5,11-dione is a natural compound that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. PBD-5,11-dione inhibits the growth of cervical cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. In addition, this compound blocks the production of prostaglandin J2 (PGJ2) and reduces the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). This induces tumor cell death in carcinoma cell lines and also prevents tumor growth in animal models. PBD-5,11-dione is a potent inhibitor of survivin transcription and activity, which is an important regulator of apoptosis. It also induces tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL)-mediated apoptosis in tumor cells.
