1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-Naphthol is a fluorescent, kinetic and thermodynamic probe for the determination of trace amounts of aldehydes in organic solvents. The compound is prepared by the reaction of 1-naphthol with 2-chloro-pyridine in an organic solvent. The product absorbs ultraviolet light at 350 nm and emits fluorescence at 450 nm. It can be used as an extractant to measure the concentration of aldehydes in complex samples such as blood, urine, plasma and other biological fluids. 1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-Naphthol has been shown to be chemically stable under acidic or alkaline conditions, as well as when exposed to high temperatures, making it suitable for use in biological matrices.
