5-Phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of nitroheterocycles. It has been shown to have potent antibacterial activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens. The molecule can be synthesized in two steps from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and thiosemicarbazide. 5-Phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine has been shown to react with chloride ions to form a cationic chloride compound. This reaction is reversible and the product can be regenerated by adding ammonia or sodium hydroxide solution.
