H-Phe(4-Ac)-OH is a model system for studying the effect of chemical modifications on protein synthesis. It is a cyclic peptide with a reactive amino acid at the N-terminus, which is able to react with proteins and form covalent bonds. H-Phe(4-Ac)-OH has minimal toxicity in human serum and can be used as an inhibitor of protein synthesis by reacting with its target amino acids, thereby preventing their incorporation into proteins. This molecule can also be used as a substrate for enzymes that synthesize small molecules, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF).
