3-Phenylethynyl-pyridine (3PE) is a biomolecular that is used as a fluorinating agent in organic synthesis. 3PE has been shown to react with diazonium salts, forming an unstable copper complex that reacts with anilines and terminal alkynes to form the corresponding pyridinium salt. The reaction mechanism of 3PE is similar to that of the electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction. This type of reaction proceeds by attacking the carbon atom at the ortho position on the aromatic ring with a nucleophile. A new carbon-carbon bond forms and the original aromatic ring is preserved. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) for this type of reaction is calculated using quantum mechanics methods or molecular dynamics simulations. The supramolecular nature of 3PE provides it with high reactivity, making it suitable for use in cross-coupling reactions in which two different molecules are coupled together to form one product.
