1-Penten-3-ol is a reactive oxygen species that is formed from the reaction of glycolaldehyde with an oxidizing agent. It has been found to be a metabolite in perennial ryegrass and wheat leaves. 1-Penten-3-ol binds to fatty acids, forming a disulfide bond. This reaction may take place in the chloroplast membranes of plants or in the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria and fungi. The binding of 1-penten-3-ol to fatty acid leads to the formation of 5-membered heteroaryl compounds, which can inhibit cell growth.
