2-Phenylnaphthalene is a model system for the study of the reaction mechanism of hydroxylation. It is a quinoline derivative that is used in the synthesis of drugs, including anti-inflammatory drugs and cancer treatments. 2-Phenylnaphthalene has been shown to have low energy, allowing it to react with electron-rich molecules such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This reaction produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are known to cause inflammation and are capable of damaging DNA. 2-Phenylnaphthalene also has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells by inhibiting the ability of cancer cells to take up glucose, which deprives them of an important source of energy.
2-Phenylnaphthalene reacts with PAHs such as benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(b)fluoranthene to produce ROS that can damage DNA
