2-Phenylethylamine is an endogenous substance that is structurally related to phenethylamine. It has been shown to bind to the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which has been implicated in cognitive function and control of movement. 2-Phenylethylamine has low potency, with a rate constant of 0.3 s-1 M-1. It acts as a fluorogenic probe for α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and can be used to identify their location in the brain. By binding to the 5HT2 receptor, 2-phenylethylamine modulates the response element for dopamine production in the brain. This molecule has also been shown to have a stabilizing effect on organic compounds during chromatographic analysis.
