Potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (KHMDS) is a model system for nitrogen compounds. It is stable in the form of stable complexes with antimicrobial agents, such as benzylpenicillin, and also forms stable complexes with transfer reactions. KHMDS has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The structure of KHMDS was determined by x-ray crystallography, which revealed that it contains amide groups coordinated by potassium ions. This coordination geometry is similar to other amide compounds such as urea and thiourea.
