Biphenyl is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C6H5CH. It is composed of two benzene rings joined by a single bond. The compound is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents. 4-Pentylbiphenyl has been shown to catalyze the oxidation of benzene, linearly, naphthalene, and dipole reagents such as osmium tetroxide at low temperatures. It can be used as an electron acceptor for ruthenium catalysis. This biphenyl has a transition temperature of about -50°C to -60°C, which means that it becomes solid at those temperatures.
