2-(2-Pyridyl)benzo[b]thiophene is a fluorescent ancillary ligand that has been used for crystallographic studies. It is a blue-emitting compound with a strong red shift in the visible-light absorption spectrum. 2-(2-Pyridyl)benzo[b]thiophene can be introduced into metal complexes to alter their properties and increase their stability. The photophysical properties of 2-(2-pyridyl)benzo[b]thiophene have been studied, as well as its ability to form ligands with metals. This ligand has also been shown to be more thermostable than most other pyridine derivatives.
